What is Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP)?

Much has been written about an exciting new  treatment called platelet-rich plasma (PRP) and its effectiveness in treating orthopedic injuries. PRP is a medical treatment that uses your body’s own healing power to relieve pain and restore function in injured joints and soft tissue. Platelets contain important growth factors and nourishing nutrients that help heal degenerative conditions and injuries.

Your blood is made of 4 different parts: liquid plasma, platelets, and red and white blood cells. Platelets prevent bleeding by clotting the blood. Platelets also release growth factors and proteins that support cell growth and help form new tissues. PRP is plasma with highly concentrated amounts of platelets. When used as a treatment, PRP provides high quantities of platelets that promote tissue growth, reduce inflammation and stimulate healing. It is known for its effectiveness in treating orthopedic injuries.

How Does PRP Treatment Work?

Our medical team will draw a sample of your blood. While you wait, it’s spun down and prepared to create plasma rich in platelets.  Since we use your own blood, PRP contains your own platelets and growth factors. Your unique platelet-rich plasma is then injected into the areas that need healing using  visually-guided imaging. This helps ensure it is placed where it will be the most effective.  Your body starts the process of building back healthy tissue in the affected area. The non-invasive therapy usually takes about an hour to complete. Unlike the risks associated with surgery, PRP risks are minimal - similar to those associated with any blood draw or injection.

PRP Can Speed Up the Recovery

In many cases, PRP therapy can speed up healing time from injuries and degeneration. Studies show PRP can help heal the affected area faster and more effectively than your body can on its own, or with surgery, medications, and physical therapy.

What Conditions Can Be Treated with PRP?

According to research studies currently reported, PRP can be effective in treating a variety of conditions including osteoarthritis of the knee, chronic tendon injuries, and acute ligament and muscle injuries. Talk to one of our doctors and see if PRP can benefit you. Many famous athletes, including Tiger Woods, Rafael Nadal, Steph Curry, and Maria  Sharapova, have been treated with PRP. Some athletes have credited PRP with their ability to return to competition more quickly.
